Montgomery County, PA DUI Checkpoints Enhanced by PennDOT Funding
This year, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (“PennDOT”) will sponsor efforts by local PA police departments against drunk driving. Holiday weekends normally generate increased DUI enforcement, but residents of Montgomery County, PA can expect the increased enforcement to continue throughout the rest of the year. PennDOT received $4.2 million in federal funds this year to help target impaired drivers on the roads. This $4.2 million will sponsor approximately 900 sobriety checkpoints throughout Pennsylvania this year. It is expected that about $618,000.00 will go to police departments in Montgomery, Bucks, Chester, Philadelphia and Delaware counties.
DUI checkpoints, or sobriety checkpoints, are well-marked, stationary roadblocks conducted by Pennsylvania police officers who make suspicionless stops to check for intoxicated drivers. The police officers use a predetermined objective standard to determine which drivers to stop. Public policy in Pennsylvania supports the use of these checkpoint measures because the DUI checkpoints serve as a deterrent to potential PA drunk drivers, and the PA DUI checkpoints seek to remove dangerous drivers from the roads.
The communities of Abington, Cheltenham, Upper Moreland, Lower Moreland and Whitemarsh have already witnessed an increase in sobriety checkpoints throughout the early part of the summer. According to phillyburbs.com, there will be another sobriety checkpoint this weekend, July 8-10, in Upper Dublin Township.
If you or a loved one has been accused of driving under the influence (DUI), you should contact an experienced PA DUI attorney as soon as possible. Those convicted of a DUI in Pennsylvania are subject to harsh penalties, including loss of license and possible jail time.
