Lansdale, PA Traffic Lawyer: PA Gov. Signs Safe Passing Law for Bikes
Pennsylvania drivers should be aware of a new law that will soon go into effect. The PA Governor signed a new bill, HB 170, into law earlier this month in an effort to make the PA roads safer for bicyclists. HB 170, also known as the “Safe Passing Bill”, amends PA’s motor vehicle code to increase protections for bike riders.
Under PA's new traffic law:
-
Minimum passing distance - every car that passes a bike in PA must give at least 4 feet of clearance at a safe, reduced speed
-
Cars, trucks and other motor vehichles may not make any turn to interfere with a bicycle proceeding straight
-
Bicycles must be operated in the right hand lane, or as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway, unless a bike is using any portion of a PA road due to unsafe surface conditions
The addition of these provisions to the PA motor vehicle code creates opportunities for driver education regarding bicycles, as the new law can now be included on PennDOT driver licensing tests and driver’s education classes across the state.
